Brunel has partnered with a leading company in the Defense sector to offer an exciting opportunity for a Cyber Security Specialist to join on a fixed term basis, located south of the Perth CBD.

About this role

Key Responsibilities:

The Cyber Security Specialist is responsible for safeguarding the organisation's systems, networks, and data from evolving cyber threats. This role focuses on risk assessment, the implementation of security measures, compliance with Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) requirements, and collaboration with outsourced IT teams to maintain a robust security posture. The Cyber Security Specialist provides strategic oversight, incident response leadership, and ensures alignment with Defence guidelines, protecting the organisation's operations and reputation.

Cyber Security Strategy and Governance

  • Develop and implement security policies, procedures, and guidelines aligned with DISP requirements, industry best practices, and regulatory standards
  • Conduct risk assessments and vulnerability scans, identifying potential weaknesses and recommending remediation strategies
  • Maintain and update the organisation's Cyber Incident Response Plan in accordance with Australian Defence practices.

Incident Management and Response

  • Lead and coordinate incident response efforts, investigate security breaches, and provide timely and detailed incident reports
  • Monitor and analyse network traffic, system logs, and security events to detect, assess, and respond to potential threats promptly
  • Provide out-of-hours support for critical security incidents as required.

Security Oversight and Collaboration

  • Provide day-to-day direction and oversight of the outsourced IT desk services team, ensuring adherence to security protocols and organisational standards
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, Defence representatives, and external partners to align security practices with operational and contractual obligations.

Compliance and Auditing

  • Ensure compliance with DISP membership requirements and other Defence-specific regulations
  • Perform security audits and penetration tests to assess the effectiveness of existing controls and recommend improvements
  • Support Defence security assessments and accreditation processes, maintaining a state of readiness for audits

Continuous Improvement and Awareness

  • Stay informed on the latest cyber threats, technologies, and Defence security trends, recommending upgrades to security tools and processes
  • Deliver security awareness training and guidance to employees, fostering a culture of security awareness across the organisation.

Is this you?

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CEH, or CompTIA Security+ are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in cybersecurity roles, with demonstrated expertise in risk assessment, incident response, and security operations.
  • Experience in Defence, DISP-related work, or other highly regulated industries is advantageous
  • Strong familiarity with Australian Defence security requirements and standards
  • Solid knowledge of network security concepts, operating systems (Windows Server, VMWare, Oracle and Linux), and networking protocols (Cisco, Dell)
  • Proficiency with security assessment tools, such as Microsoft defender for endpoint and other Microsoft 365 security solutions. Additionally, vulnerability scanners, and implementation of SIEM systems
  • Excellent written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to compile reports
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex incidents and propose practical solutions.
